The collection consists of correspondence relating to the Stephens-Reid families, who were located in Crawfordville, Taliaferro County, Georgia. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence to Mary Matilda (Mollie) Stephens Reid, with some interspersed letters to her son, Leidy, and her uncle, Alexander Hamilton Stephens, Vice President of the Confederacy. There are a few letters to Dr. William T. (Bob) Reid from his brother, James W. Reid of Thomasville, Georgia, also a physician, and some concerning his practice from a drug distributor. The earliest part of the collection (1842-1849) is made up of letters to Alexander H. Stephens from Mercer University and his brother, John L. Stephens, Mollie's father. The bulk of the collection is comprised of friendly letters to Mollie Reid with a concentration in early 1962 concerning the death of her husband. Some of her correspondents include Rebecca Burch, a niece by marriage in Thomasville, Georgia, her mother, Mary Elizabeth Booker Stephens, sister Anna Stephens Alexander, and her brothers, John Alexander Stephens, Linton A. Stephens, and William G. (Billy) Stephens. There was also another brother, James Clarence, who is mentioned in some of the letters. Mary's son Leidy (born apparently in 1859 or 1860) is mentioned in nearly every letter. There are very few letters after 1866. The letters concern happenings in the towns where the correspondents live, and news of mutual friends and relatives. Some points of interest in the letters include discussion of the Civil War adn the conditions under which the soldiers lived, as well as the details of home and religious life. The content of the letters varies with the writer and the tempo of the times and gives a special insight into an educated Southern family's life experiences: politics, health, sympathy, costs, entertainment, anecdotes, and legal matters.
